Course overview

This practical, empowering course introduces primary teachers to artificial intelligence in a clear, accessible and classroom-focused way. You'll get hands-on experience with leading platforms such as Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Claude, learning to create high-quality, curriculum-aligned resources efficiently. A strong emphasis is placed on inclusion, showing how AI can support differentiation through Universal Design for Learning so you can meet the needs of diverse learners. The course also covers AI in whole-school practice, including School Self-Evaluation, planning and collaboration, and crucially how to critically evaluate AI-generated content and use it safely, responsibly and in line with Department of Education guidance. By the end, you'll feel confident using AI to support your work and reduce workload while remaining firmly in control.

Course structure

20 hours total: 10 hours online learning plus 10 self-verified hours (module exercises, resources, discussion forum and a reflective learning log). Compulsory elements are two discussion forum posts per module, a reflective learning assignment and a personal learning record. Technical support is provided throughout.

Certification & EPV days

Approved by the Department of Education & Skills for EPV certification, with your start and completion dates printed on the cert. One course earns 3 EPV days, two courses 4 days, three courses 5 days. If you buy more than one, you complete them one at a time.

Duration

Courses run from Wednesday 1st July and must be finished by 5pm on Wednesday 22nd July. Bookings close on 20th July. You work through it in your own time within that window. As per DES criteria you must complete the required hours, and your dates appear on your cert for your EPV days.

Course modules

1. Understanding AI in education

Build a clear, practical understanding of what AI is, how it works and why it matters for teaching and learning. Explore key concepts such as bias, accuracy and professional responsibility, grounded in current Department of Education guidance.

2. AI for planning and resource creation

Hands-on experience using AI tools to create lesson plans, teaching resources and assessment materials. Develop prompt-writing skills and learn how to evaluate and refine AI-generated content for classroom use.

3. Differentiation, inclusion and UDL with AI

Explore how AI can support inclusive teaching by generating differentiated materials for a wide range of learners. Apply UDL principles and Bloom's Taxonomy to create accessible, engaging and appropriately challenging learning experiences.

4. AI in school practice

SSE, planning and workload. Examine how AI can support school planning, SSE processes and professional collaboration. Explore practical ways to reduce workload while maintaining quality and improving efficiency across your practice.

5. Ethics, evaluation and responsible AI use

Develop a clear understanding of the ethical, legal and professional considerations around AI in schools, including data protection, safeguarding and academic integrity. Learn how to use AI safely and responsibly in your classroom and school.
