Course overview

Participants explore leadership across key domains including teaching and learning, organisational management and school development, while building the skills needed to lead people, manage change and foster a positive school culture. A strong emphasis is placed on reflective practice, professional identity and developing leadership capacity at all levels. Through practical tasks, collaborative discussion and school-based application, you'll gain the confidence and clarity to lead with both purpose and authenticity, balancing the head and the heart of effective leadership.

Course structure

20 hours total: 10 hours online learning plus 10 self-verified hours (module exercises, resources, discussion forum and a reflective learning log). Compulsory elements are two discussion forum posts per module, a reflective learning assignment and a personal learning record. Technical support is provided throughout.

Department of Education and Skills

Certification & EPV days

Approved by the Department of Education & Skills for EPV certification, with your start and completion dates printed on the cert. One course earns 3 EPV days, two courses 4 days, three courses 5 days. If you buy more than one, you complete them one at a time.

Duration

Courses run from Wednesday 1st July and must be finished by 5pm on Wednesday 22nd July. Bookings close on 20th July. You work through it in your own time within that window. As per DES criteria you must complete the required hours, and your dates appear on your cert for your EPV days.

Course modules

1. Driving educational change

Leadership in teaching and learning. Explore the role of leadership in improving teaching and learning, using the Looking at Our School framework. Focus on instructional leadership, setting high expectations and leading meaningful change.

2. Leading schools

Effective organisational management. Develop practical skills in managing school systems, communication and policy. Explore leadership responsibilities in safeguarding, wellbeing, resource management and creating a positive school culture.

3. Transformational leadership

Leading school improvement. Examine how vision, values and culture drive school improvement. Develop strategies for leading change, using SSE processes and fostering collaboration across the school community.

4. Leading for impact

Building leadership capacity. Explore distributed leadership and how to develop leadership in others. Focus on building professional capacity, supporting teams and creating a culture of shared responsibility and continuous improvement.

5. The person and the professional

Developing your leadership identity. Reflect on your own leadership style, values and philosophy. Build self-awareness, emotional intelligence and a clear sense of purpose to support confident, authentic leadership.

About Fiona Wickham

Fiona is an experienced school leader, coach and mentor with over 25 years in education, including 18 years in school leadership. She is passionate about supporting teachers and school leaders to grow in confidence, step into leadership and navigate their careers with clarity and purpose.

Through her work with Teach Lead Thrive Coaching, Fiona has supported hundreds of educators at key stages of their journey, helping them recognise their strengths, develop an authentic leadership style and prepare for new opportunities, including leadership interviews.
