6 Pencil and Paper Games as Gaeilge for Wet Breaks (Free Printable)

Children pick up Irish fastest when they use it for something they actually want to do. Games are perfect for that. The rules are short, the phrases repeat, and nobody minds reading them twice when there is a game to win.

Poncanna agus Boscaí game page from the free Peann Luaidhe, Páipéar, Imir! Gaeilge printable pack

Our free pack, Peann Luaidhe, Páipéar, Imir!, has six classic 2-player games with every rule written as Gaeilge. All you need is a printer and a pencil.

1. Poncanna agus Boscaí (Dots and Boxes)

Players take turns joining two dots. Close a box and you write your initial in it and go again. Great for counting and for quiet concentration.

2. Longa Cogaidh (Battleships)

Each player hides a fleet and calls out squares like B4. It is a natural way to practise letters, numbers and grid references through Irish.

3. X + O’s

The game every child already knows, so the Irish rules are easy to follow. A good first game for younger classes.

4. S-O-S

Players write S or O in any empty square and score a point for each S-O-S they make. It rewards planning ahead.

5. Cluiche na 21 Bata (21 Sticks)

Cross out 1, 2 or 3 sticks each turn. Whoever crosses out the last stick wins. The sheet ends with a challenge: can the pair find a winning strategy? Perfect for early finishers.

6. Ceithre sa Líne (Four in a Row)

Marks fill each column from the bottom up. The first to get four in a row wins. Swap who starts each game.

Tips for teachers

  • Read the rules aloud as a class before the first game.
  • Keep a few copies in a drawer for wet breaks and early finishers.
  • Encourage pupils to keep score and call out moves in Irish.
  • Laminate a set and use whiteboard markers to reuse it all year.
